Dr. Christian Schmitz, lawyer and certified specialist lawyer in criminal law, is a partner of the firm.  The main focus of his work is in white collar crime and tax criminal law.

Dr. Schmitz has defended clients in numerous large-scale white collar criminal proceedings.  He believes an early-defined and consistent defence strategy, along with effective communication, often leads to a successful outcome at a preliminary stage in legal proceedings.  In the courtroom, Dr. Schmitz has proven his trial skills in multiple commercial cases.

In addition to individual defence, providing criminal law consulting for companies is a focal point of his activities (according to JUVE Handbook 2016/17 – White Collar Crime and Tax Criminal Law: “Schmitz is strongly dedicated to the side of business”). This involves, on the one hand, the tracking and processing of critical information (cf. Focus Lawyers Special 2017); and on the other hand, advising companies preventively, in particular on the implementation of compliance programs.  Dr. Schmitz is also a lecturer at the Rheinische Fachhochschule as part of the Master's in Compliance programme.

Both in individual defence and in commercial criminal law consultation, colleagues and clients praise his "strong grasp of business economics" and "solution-oriented" advice (JUVE Handbook 2017/18 – White Collar Crime and Tax Criminal Law).  Dr. Schmitz is regarded as "legally outstanding, professionally experienced"; furthermore as "very cooperative", but always acting "in the interest of the client" (according to the JUVE Handbook 2018/19 – White Collar Crime and Tax Criminal Law).

Dr. Schmitz studied at the University of Cologne and received his doctorate after defending a thesis on criminal procedure.  While there, he also conducted seminars and lectures in the field of criminal law.  His legal clerkship was followed by further training in a criminal law firm in the United States of America.

He is a member of the Cologne Bar Association (KAV), the German Bar Association (DAV), the Criminal Law Working Group of the German Bar Association (DAV), the Economic Criminal Law Association (WisteV), the German Institute for Compliance (DICO), and the Association for the Promotion of the Institute for Criminal Law and Criminal Procedural Law at the University of Cologne.
